Wine Tasting - December 26 ~ 28, 2019

Jansz Premium Sparkling Rose, Tasmania, Australia
92 Points, Wine.com:  Unique and refined, this wine speaks so well of Tasmania! Wonderful aromas of wild strawberries and delicate flowers; medium bodied on the palate and bright with the zest of life; lively tart and ripe strawberry flavors on the palate; crisp and rewarding in the finish.

2016 Peirano Petit Sirah The Heritage Collection, Lodi, California
Winemaker Notes:  The intense inky black color of this wine exhibits a rich deep hue with perfect clarity. The senses are tempted by an array of wild blueberries, plums and fresh baked boysenberry pie.  The palate is mysterious and seductively filled with bright blueberries, boysenberries, and black pepper, with chewy moderate tannins. The finish is soft and mysterious with a hint of cocoa.

2013 Vinosia Taurasi Santandrea, Campania, Italy
95 points, James Suckling:  Fantastic aromas of dark fruits and walnut, sweet tobacco, dark tea and balsamic. Some oysters, too. Full Body, powerful and rich. So much going on here. A great wine from Campania.

2015 Gallerie Latro Cabernet Knights Valley, Sonoma County, California
93 points, Wine Advocate: Deep purple-black colored, the wine offers up warm blueberry and plum notions with hints of black soil, stewed tea, menthol and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, the fruits flavors completely fill the mouth, with blue fruit preserves and a lovely perfumed nature, featuring plush tannins and plenty of freshness defining the long finish.

2014 Inglenook Rutherford Cabernet, Napa Valley, California
94 points, Vinous:  A powerful and dense wine in the glass. Sweet tobacco, menthol, licorice and grilled herbs give the wine its aromatic nuance. This is an especially savory style, with mid-weight structure and linear tannins that need time to soften. This is a super-classic Rutherford Cabernet.

Wine Tasting - December 18 ~ 21, 2019
Champagne & Malbec Fest

NV Laurent Perrier Cuvee Rose Brut Champagne
93 points, Wine Spectator: A rich rosé Champagne, offering seamlessly woven flavors of baked black cherry, candied pink grapefruit peel, brioche and pastry cream. Vibrant acidity and a finely detailed mousse send this dancing across the palate.

NV Gosset Grand Reserve Brut Champagne
93 points, Wine Spectator: A tightly knit Champagne, backed by racy acidity, this is fresh and harmonious, with a finely detailed mousse and a delicate range of black raspberry, pickled ginger and chalk flavors, offering a touch of salted almond that echoes on the finish. Drink now through 2024.

NV Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée Brut Champagne, Holiday Packaging with Glasses
93 points, James Suckling: The brioche and cooked-apple and cream character really comes through here. Full-bodied and round with fine bubbles. Flavorful and intense. Vivid, bread-dough finish. This is four years on lees. 55% chardonnay and the rest pinot.

NV Laurent Perrier Demi Sec, Tours-Sur Marne, Champagne
90 Points, Wine & Spirits: A heady style of Champagne, this uses sweetness to bring up the fruit flavors, so it tastes like an off-dry riesling on limestone. The scents bring ginger and cider apple, while the finish is richer, with flavors of peaches and cream. It ends with enough acidity to match a fruit and cheese plate.

2012 Puro Uno Malbec Limitado, Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina
Deep color. Aromas of violets and black cherry, with boysenberry and blackberry in the mouth. Good depth and length. 100% Malbec, from vineyards averaging 3,450 feet above sea level, aged 20 months in 100% new oak, 80% French and 20% American. 570 cases made.

2011 Puro Uno Mega Malbec, Lujan De Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina
93 points, James Suckling: Single vineyard, century old vines, aged 30 months in 100% new oak, 70% French and 30% American.  1,734 bottles made.

2011 Puro Uno Mega Malbec Gran Reserva, Lujan De Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina
Aged 36 months in 100% new oak, 70% French and 30% American. Vines over a century old from a single vineyard. 1,734 bottles made. The new top wine of Puro Uno.

2009 Puro Uno Quadra Limitado, Lujan De Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina
Winemaker Notes:  Sourced from fruit out of the famous Lujan de Cuyo area of Mendoza, the 2009 Puro Uno Quadro Limitado is a blend of 48% Malbec, 21% Syrah, 18% Tempranillo and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. Only around 600 cases of this wine produced. The aromatics offer a plethora of red fruits, currant, plum and cherry, accentuated with sweet spice, mocha and tobacco leaf. Medium full to fuller bodied, this has a nice mid palate suppleness giving this a smooth texture with finer grained, ripe tannins on the backend carried by good acidity that helps keep the fruit fresh. A nice spice component is interwoven into the fruit which comes through on the finish.

Wine Tasting - December 11 ~ 14, 2019

2014 Grgich Hills Estate Fume Blanc, Napa Valley, California
91 points, Wine Enthusiast:  Dark golden-hay color. Fermented mostly in 900-gallon French oak foudres, with the remainder in smaller French oak barrels. Nutty lime and gooseberry provide intrigue and saltiness against bright acidity, making a complex and compelling impression on the palate.

2016 Biggio Hamina "Holmes Gap Vineyard" Pinot Noir, Van Duzer Corridor AVA, Oregon
93 points, Vinous:  Translucent red. Highly perfumed, spice-tinged raspberry, cherry, incense and floral scents develop minerality with air. Juicy, appealingly sweet and lively on the palate, offering sharply delineated red berry, blood orange and floral pastille flavors that slowly deepen as the wine opens up. The mineral and floral notes carry through an impressively long, energetic finish that features discreet tannins and a subtle touch of bitter orange peel.

2016 Chateau Laussec Côtes de Castillion, Bordeaux, France
91 Points, Wine Advocate:  The 2016 Laussac has a charming if slightly rustic bouquet that is well defined and fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, quite classic in style with plenty of undergrowth-infused black fruit towards the finish, but I like the length and its nascent stubbornness. This could well turn out to be a very delicious Côtes de Castillon.

2016 Justin Iscoceles, Paso Robles, Central Coast, California
90 points, Wine.com: This wine shows a load of ripe fruit and a generous palate. Its aromas and flavors of black fruit and oak should stand up with any red meat dish no matter how rich it is.

2016 Auros Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, California
93 points, Tasting Panel: Aged 18 months in French oak, this wine was made with fruit (including some Petit Verdot and Malbec) sourced from three of Napa Valley's sub-appellations: Oak Knoll, Oakville, and the Stags Leap District, with 15 different soil types among them. Aromas of fresh blackberry and plum combine with a hint of mocha on the inspired nose as grainy tannins, a rich mouthfeel, and balanced fruit and acid make this red work to its optimal ability. Leather and fennel come in for a savory finish.

Wine Tasting - December 3 ~ 7, 2019
Cabernet Fest

2016 Vasse Felix Felius Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River, Australia
91 points, Editor's Choice, Wine Enthusiast:  Wild blueberry, strawberry, white-pepper spice, crushed violets, and dusty warm earth. The mouthfeel is medium in weight, tightly gripped by herbal tannins and a juicy fruity lift on the finish.

2018 Duckhorn Canvasback Cabernet, Red Mountain, Washington State
91 points, Jeb Dunnuck.com: Blackcurrants, black cherries, spice box, dried herbs, and earthy notes all emerge from the glass, and it's medium-bodied, elegant, and seamless on the palate, with beautiful fruit. It's good today but has good underlying tannins.

2015 Keenan Winery Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa, California
92 pts, Wine Advocate:  Produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and displaying a deep garnet-purple color and nose of expressive blackberries, blueberries and pencil shavings plus lovely dried leaves, rose hip tea and fragrant earth nuances, the wine is medium to full-bodied in the firm, taut, energetic and lively mouth, with grainy tannins and a long, earthy finish.

2016 L'Ecole Walla Walla Cabernet, Washington State
93 pts, James Suckling: There's a very assertive, mulberry and cedary-oak fusion in this structured and very youthful cabernet. The tannins clasp the finish tight and hold the fruit flavors long. Give this a few years to unfurl. Try from 2023.

2015 Catena 'El Enigma' Cabernet Franc, Mendoza, Argentina
94 points, Tim Atkin: Blended with 6% Malbec this old foudre aged Cabernet Franc is grassy, sappy and refreshing, with notes of green tea, cassis and aromatic spices. The 60% whole bunches add another layer of complexity.

2016 Schrader "Double Diamond' Napa Cabernet, California
94 points Wine.com: This wine shows an amazing richness and outstanding balance. Its aromas and flavors of black fruit and dried earth are persistent and beautiful and should pair nicely with a thick cut of rare prime rib.

2016 Anakota Estate Cab "Helena Montana", Knights Valley, California
96 points, Wine Advocate:  Deep purple-black in color, it reveals slightly tarry notes to begin, soon opening out to beautiful black cherry, black berry and warm cassis scents with hints of cigar box, charcuterie, licorice and Indian spices. A rock-solid frame of grainy tannins and wonderful freshness support the densely packed earth layers, finishing very long and savory. This needs time!

2015 Juslyn Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Spring Mountain District, California
95 pts, Wine Spectator:  Sports an intense and pure beam of raspberry and cassis flavors, flanked by sage, incense and black tea aromas and backed by mouthwatering licorice snap notes and a bramble-filled finish. A beautiful example of mountain fruit. Best from 2022 through 2040.

Wine Tasting - November 27, 29 & 30, 2019

2018 Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Rose, Napa Valley, California
Winemaker Notes: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 17% Zinfandel and 5% Cabernet Franc.  The nose has aromas of cherry blossom, watermelon, and strawberry followed by an explosion on the palate of passion fruit and peach. With its round mouthfeel, this wine has perfectly balanced acidity and an addicting finish.

2017 Niner Pinot Noir, Edna Valley, California
93 points, Wine Enthusiast ( #73 W/E TOP 100 CELLAR SELECTIONS 2019): Plush aromas of strawberry and cherry meet with subtle accents of clove, gingerbread, cinnamon and flowers on the nose of this bottling from Jespersen Ranch. A strawberry flavor dominates the palate, with touches of pepper and tobacco leaf, all framed by full tannins that hold firm into the finish. Drink through 2032.

2015 Vasse Felix "Filius" Cabernet, Margaret Valley, Australia
94 points, Decanter: Consistently one of region's best value reds, this is soft and fleshy, with mulberry and bramble aromatics and a plush, velvety texture. It has the structure to age, yet is well integrated and opulent, finishing with fine, ripe tannins. Drinking Window 2023 – 2042.

2015 Banfi Bolgheri ASKA Rosso, Bolgheri, Italy
93 points, Wine Spectator: Dusty black currant, olive, gravel, graphite and spice flavors combine for a positive effect in this tightly wound red. Needs a bit of time to relax, but all the components are well-proportioned. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2021 through 2032.

2016 La Viella Alta Black Slate, Priorat, Spain
94 points, Jeb Dunnuck:  60% Grenache and 40% Carignan that was mostly destemmed and spent a full year in used barrels. Thrilling blue fruits, tar, rose petals, and a smoky, marine, iodine-like character all emerge from this full-bodied effort that opens up nicely with time in the glass. Tasting like it cost three times the price, it picks up more minerality with time in the glass, has beautiful balance, and great purity of fruit. It would be hard to find a better value.  {# 24 WINE SPECTATOR TOP 100 OF 2019}

Wine Tasting - November 20 ~ 23, 2019
ZinFest

2017 Marietta Cellars Román Series, North Coast
91 points, Vinous: A gorgeous, Zinfandel-based blend from Marietta that offers sweet floral notes and bright, red-toned berry flavors. Medium-bodied and refreshing, the 2017 is delicious, fun and easy to drink. I loved it.

2017 Terraces Estate Zinfandel, Napa Valley, California
Winemaker Notes: Aromas of ripe raspberry, fresh blackberry, prune, toasted cedar, vanilla and baking spice. A rich palate with flavors of cranberry, baked black cherry, espresso, and a touch of white pepper. Soft tannins.

2017 Rombauer Estate Twin Rivers Eldorado, Sierra Foothills
Winemaker Notes: Aromas of red and mountain berries mixed with brown sugar, tobacco and a hint of violet. Expansive and dense with flavors of plums, raspberry, blackberry jam, vanilla, and dried florals.  Long finish.

2017 Tres Sabores Zinfandel, Rutherford Estate, California
Winemaker Notes: Sumptuous berry-forward aromas and spicy, black-pepper, white-pepper, and Aleppo-pepper flavors. A wine with a cultured taste and a capacious soul.

2017 Ridge Lytton Springs Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley
94 points, Vinous: Opens up beautifully, with bright acids that drive a whole range of red/purplish fruit intermingled with floral notes. Creamy and ample in feel, the wine boasts superb balance and pedigree.  Cellar for at least a few years.

2017 Ridge Zinfandel Pagani Ranch, Sonoma
94 points, Vinous: A dark, exotic beauty with off the charts flavor intensity and depth, striking perfume, voluptuous fruit and magnificent balance. Inky red/purplish berries, lavender and spice are all amped up in this racy wine.

2017 Marietta Cellars Angeli Estate Zinfandel, Alexander Valley
94 points, Wine Advocate: Rich, pliant and expressive. Super-ripe black cherry, hard candy, new leather, lavender and mint give it decidedly dark shades of expression. This sumptuous, flavorful wine should drink well for another decade.

2014 Arrowood Estate "Amapola Creek" Monte Rosso, Sonoma
94 points, Wine Advocate: Dense opaque purple, with a big, sweet blackberry and cassis nose of camphor, roasted meats and hints of Provençal herbs and pepper. This rich, full-bodied, inky wine should drink nicely for at least a decade.

Wine Tasting - November 14 & 15, 2019

2017 Daou Chardonnay Reserve, Paso Robles, California
92 points, Wine Enthusiast:  Creamy aromas of lemon meringue, butterscotch and toasted marshmallow are cut by zesty lemon peels and flesh on the nose of this bottling.  It's a very full expression of Chardonnay on the palate, where toast and almond tones are leveled by lemon-lime acidity and whiteflower flavors, all finishing on a caramel candy tone.

2015 Tua Rita Perlato del Bosco, Tuscany, Italy
93 points, James Suckling: Plenty of plum berry and chocolate character with some spice.  Medium to full body, chewy tannins yet polished and extremely fine. I love the palate to this. Sangiovese.

2012 Baron de Ley Gran Reserva, Rioja, Spain
91 points, Wine Enthusiast:
Classic Rioja aromas of root beer, cedar, cigar box, olive and earthy baked-berry fruits open this gran reserva. A weighty palate is cut by acidity, while this offers flavors of baked cherry, cassis and spice. A rush of acidity lends length to a finish with tobacco, pepper and dried berry flavors. Drink through 2025.

2016 Artadi Viñas de Gain Tempranillo, Rioja, Spain
93 points, James Suckling: This has the typical ripe-blueberry nose of Rioja, but is finer than the majority of young reds from this region. Makes you think of freshly crushed berries. The supple tannins are beautifully integrated and the finish is energetic. Drink or hold.

2012 Puro Uno "Artist Series" Super Premium Malbec
Winemaker notes:  Working alongside Michel Rolland for nearly 15 years, Marcelo Pelleriti has progressed to world-class master winemaker.  Frankie Baroudi with his own style and finesse compliments Marcelo's fine work to finish the blending process to his exacting standards, and Viola… we introduce the MEGA Malbec Artist series from Puro Uno.  Our new Mega Malbec Artist Series wines will impress first with the art, but then will overwhelm with the abundant fruit yet refined and perfectly balanced acidity and tannins.  With over three years of aging in new French oak, in the best cooperages available anywhere, using only single vineyard fruit from 103 year old vines, these are no ordinary wines.

2017 Baletto Chardonnay "Teresa's" Russian River, California
90 points, Wine Enthusiast: Thirst quenching in lemon, anise and wet stone, this is a steely, focused white that will appeal to fans of the unoaked style. It finishes on a lingering baked-bread tone.

2016 Baletto Estate Pinot Noir, Russian River, California
93 points, Wine and Spirits: This wine is fully concentrated yet delicately detailed. It's vinous rather than directly fruity, focused on the umami of velvet tannins and the bold spiciness of coriander and fennel. Dark, savory and yielding, it's a gracious Russian River pinot noir.

2017 Martin Ray Napa Cabernet, Napa Valley, California
90 points,Wine.com: The 2017 Martin Ray Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful wine. It shows excellent depth, smoothness, and balance. Its aromas and flavors of dusty black fruit, anise, and leather should pair it well with a finely-grilled ribeye.

2013 Mosquita Muerta Blend de Tintas, Mendoza, Argentina
93 points, Wine Advocate:  This red blend has aromas of herbs and ripe berries intermixed with an earthy touch. It's a Malbec-based blend with some 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in similar proportions. It fermented in open top oak barrels and egg-shaped cement vats. 2013 was a cool year and produced wines with good tension and a perfect, slow ripening. Both the palate and nose showed that freshness, with acid berry aromas and nicely integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied, refreshing, tasty and easy to drink. 4,500 bottles produced.

2015 Chiarlo Cipressi Nizza Barbera D'Asti, Piedmont, Italy
95 points, Wine Enthusiast, Editor's Choice, #1 Top 100 List 2018Elegantly structured, delicious and loaded with personality, this benchmark Nizza offers earthy aromas of truffle, leather, game, pressed violet and ripe black-skinned fruit. The aromas carry over to the savory palate, along with star anise, black cherry, mature plum and crushed mint. It's balanced by polished tannins and fresh acidity. Drink through 2025.

Wine Tasting - October 23 ~ 26, 2019
Bordeaux & Italian Wine Fest

2016 Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco, Piedmonte, Italy
93 points, Wine Advocate:  This wine could qualify as a full-fledged Barolo. Barrels not used in the final Barolo Castiglione blend are used. Langhe Nebbiolo is one of the fastest-growing categories in the entire wine region. This beautiful vintage, with its balanced fruit and freshness, is a perfect example.

2013 Carparzo Brunello, Tuscany, Italy
95 points, Wine Spectator. #17 Wine SpectatorTop 100 of 2018: This cuts more of a broad swath than its peers, yet remains graceful, evoking strawberry, cherry, tobacco and stony mineral flavors. Long and dense in structure, with a tobacco- and underbrush-tinged finish. Best from 2021 through 2033.

2016 A1A Vecchia "Soro Ugo" Bolgheri, Italy
93 points, Wine Advocate: The wine offers thickly extracted aromas of blackberry preserves and cherry confit with smoke, tar and sweet spice. A full-bodied red that wraps thickly over the palate, showing rich density and concentration along the way. Campfire ash and hickory smoke appear on the close. 45% CS, 35% M, 15% CF, 5% PV aged in barrique for 18 months.  Some 30,000 bottles were made.

2015 Collemassari Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore, Italy
97 points, Wine Advocate: Big, bold and absolutely stunning. This blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Sangiovese is dark and luscious, with overlapping melodies of tobacco, spice, dark fruit and grilled herb.  There is so much depth and power.  The wine should award a long aging trajectory for those who have the patience to wait.

2015 Château Lassègue Saint Emilion Grand Cru, France
93 points, Wine Advocate:  Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with expressive black forest cake, preserved plums and blackberry pie notes with an undercurrent of mocha, grilled meats, sandalwood and cigar box plus a waft of lavender.  Medium to full-bodied, rich and densely packed with opulent layers of spiced black fruit preserves and chocolate box notions, plush yet firm tannins, background acid, finishing long and fragrant.

2012 Château Ségla Margaux, Bordeaux, France
95+ points, Jeb Dunnuck:
The still youthful ruby/purple color is followed by impressive notes of blackcurrants, black cherries, cedar, graphite, and some earthy, underbrush-like nuances. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and balanced, it builds with time in the glass and has plenty of tannins as well as length. It will benefit from another 4-5 years of bottle age.

2015 Château Batailley Pauillac Grand Cru Classé, France
94 points, Wine Advocate:
It gathers momentum in the glass and develops a subtle mint accent. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, lithe tannin, very well balanced. Pencil shaving sprinkled over the aftertaste. Very good substance and impressive length.

Wine Tasting - October 16 ~ 19, 2019

2015 Chateau Puech-Haut "Tête de Belier" Rosé, Languedoc, France
91-93 points, Wine Advocate:  My favorite of the Rosés is the 100% Mourvèdre 2015 Languedoc Saint Drezery Tête de Belier Rosé. 93 points, Vinous: Translucent red. Highly perfumed, spice-tinged raspberry, cherry, incense and floral scents develop minerality with air. 2016 Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco, Piedmonte, Italy
93 points, Wine Advocate:  "Perbacco" translates into a somewhat corny "golly gosh" because that was the reaction the winemaker's mom had when she first tasted the wine and was told it was not a Barolo. "Perbacco, it tastes like Barolo," was her comment—and a legend was born.  … Langhe Nebbiolo is one of the fastest-growing categories in the entire wine region.  This beautiful vintage, with its balanced fruit and freshness, is a perfect example.

2016 Seven Hills Walla Walla Merlot, Washington
91 points Jeb Dunnuck: The 2016 Merlot Walla Walla Valley (11% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc), offers a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of blueberries, plums, spicy wood, and leafy herbs. It's juicy, medium-bodied, balanced, and a smoking value.

2016 Cline "Live Oak Vineyard" Zinfandel, Contra Costa County, California
93 points, Wine Enthusiast, Editor's Choice:  Toasty, doughy aromas and gorgeous blackberry and black cherry flavors make this full-bodied wine hard to resist.  Aged in new French oak, the wine has a subdued spiciness that dissolves into the perfectly ripe fruit flavors grown on old-fashioned head-trained vines.

Wine Tasting - October 2 ~ 5, 2019

2017 Domaine Fouassier, Clos Paradis, Sancerre, France
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast:  This rich wine has not lost its acidity or mineral-driven white fruits. With a touch of pepper on the palate from the alcohol, the wine is full, dense and will be better from 2019.

2014 Penner Ash "Shea Vineyard" Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District, Willamette Valley, Oregon

Needs a bit of time to relax, but all the components are well-proportioned. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2021 through 2032. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

2014 Burgess Cellars Hillside Vineyard Cabernet, Napa Valley, California
Winemaker Notes: Gorgeous black fruit, gravel, violets, black cherry and anise provide a juicy palate with nice stucture and velvety tannins along with chocolate flavors. Finishes with very elegant bittersweet tannins.  79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot.

Wine Tasting - September 25 ~ 28, 2019
Pinot Noir Fest

2016 Carmel Road Monterey Pinot Noir, Central Coast, California
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast:  This widely available bottling is an excellent choice for an attractive price. Aromas of hibiscus, pomegranate, raspberry and herbs lead into a palate with hints of game, red fruit and a touch of dried mint.

2016 La Folette Les Primeros Pinot Noir Sonoma-Monterey County, California
90 points, Wine Enthusiast: A blend of two worlds (62% of the fruit from Sonoma County and 38% from Monterey), this is an approachable red wine, with a juicy entry of savory forest floor, black tea and black cherry. It finishes in a tartness of acidity akin to rhubarb.

2014 Fort Ross Sea Slopes Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, California
91 points, Wilfred Wong:  Beautiful and alluring, the red fruit and finely scented 2014 Fort Ross Sea Slopes Pinot Noir plays delicately and refined in the aroma and on the palate. The wine's bright red fruit flavors pair well with lightly grilled salmon.

2009 Fort Ross Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, California
93 points, James Suckling: Super nose of leather, chili, shiitake mushroom, and berries. Full-bodied, with wonderfully focused tannins and spices. So refined and pretty. Gorgeous.

2017 En Route Winery 'Les Pommiers' Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, California
93 points, Wine.com:  This wine is fresh, zippy, and long. Its pure aromas and flavors of pure red fruit and dried leather should pair it with braised lamb shanks.

2017 Hartford Court Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, California
95 points Jeb Dunnock: A crazy good value from all of the estate vineyards across the Green Valley, Laguna Ridge, and Sebastopol regions. Complex notes of strawberries, cranberries, violets, pine forest, and flowers all flow to a medium-bodied Pinot Noir that has a kiss of salinity and marine notes, ripe tannins, and a great finish. 2017 Gaia Assyrtiko Thalassitis Santarini (Greece)
95 points, Wine Advocate: An unoaked Assyrtiko with 13% alcohol. I usually prize its freshness, elegance and lively demeanor. This year, one in which the wines could have a lot of concentration if you could avoid heat spikes, it has all of those things still, but gains a deeper style. Big acidity slices and dices the fruit, even in a year when it seems very dense and ripe. The gripping and tense finish seems endless. Overall, the best this wine has ever been.

Haut-Batailley is a Pauillac with distinct Saint-Julien leanings, and that is exactly what comes across here. It is also one of the overachievers of the year. The 2015 was impressive each and every of the 5 times I tasted it.

2015 Alpha Omega II Red Wine (Napa Valley, CA)
Winery Notes: The culmination of the Old World and the New World. Our two winemakers, Jean Hoefliger and Michel Rolland, worked to create a wine that is not only opulent, fruit forward and generous, but also has the backbone of European acidity and elegance. A reflection of both worlds, built to be approachable both in taste and price, and consumed early. Aged 22 months in 100% French oak, 80% new, 20% 1-year-old barrels. 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 11% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot.

Wine Tasting - January 9 ~ 12,  2019

2015 Robert Denogent Pouilly Fuissé les Reisses Vieilles Vignes (Maconnais, France)
91-93 points, Wine Advocate:
Comes from a half hectare of vines 60 years old, on deep clay soil. Clean and precise, slightly floral bouquet with subtle scents of white flower permeating the citrus fruit. I love the delineation here. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, superb tension and brightness that drives this along from start to its precise finish ending with a touch of walnut. Superb.

2013 Vinum Cellars "The Scrapper" Cabernet Franc (El Dorado County, Sierra Foothills, California)
92 points, Editor's Choice, Wine Enthusiast:
Rich, ripe, well built, full-bodied, with all for balance: robust, dry fruit flavors, good acidity, firm but not harsh tannins and appropriately strong alcohol. Great to drink now but best after 2020.

2015 Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône (France)
91 points, Wine Spectator, #43 Wine SpectatorTop 100 - 2016: Ripe, with vivid blueberry and boysenberry fruit, harnessed on the back end by a bold graphite edge. Anise and violet notes add range.

2010 Ramirez de la Piscina Gran Riserva (Rioja, Spain)
93 points Jeb Dunnuck: The 2010 Gran Reserva is 100% Tempranillo from vineyards in Abalos and San Vicente de la Sonsierra that spent 24 months in new French and American oak. It's a deep, inky effort that's loaded with notions of blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and lead pencil.  Concentrated, rich, and full-bodied on the palate, with an awesome, expansive texture and sweet tannin, it's a seriously good, rich, concentrated effort that's going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise for 10-15 years in the cellar.  Drink 2018-2033.

2014 Freemark Abbey Cabernet Napa Valley (California)
95 points Decanter: Powerful blackcurrant nose, with slightly charred oak. Very rich without being jammy, it packs a punch.  An assertive and very youthful style, but good acidity and tannins mean this should go the distance.  A bit Port-like on the nose to begin with, but there is good depth and the brightness increases in the glass.  The palate is succulent, appealing, and has potential to age.  Very good.  Intense, youthful and fruit-

Wine Tasting - January 2 ~ 5,  2019

2014 La Playa Axel Primero Red Blend (Colchagua, Chile)
93 points, www.tastings.com: Violet color. Aromas and flavors of clay, pickled citrus peels, herbed berries, and butter roasted nuts with a satiny, vibrant, fruity medium-to-full body and a smooth, delightful, medium-long blueberry pie a la mode, eucalyptus honey, and spiced nuts finish with fine, silky tannins and moderate oak. An impressive, spicy red blend with a stately, poised style. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot. 500 6-packs made.

2016 Catena Cabernet Franc San Carlos (Mendoza, Argentina)
92 points, Wine Advocate: The Appellation range of Catena keeps adding wines, and the newest is the San Carlos Cabernet Franc, produced from 20-year-old vines in El Cepillo, one of the cooler places of San Carlos in Valle de Uco. Also 2016 was a particularly cool year, so the wine is really a "cool climate" example. Aged for one year in French oak before bottling. Has tons of black pepper and balsamic, with perfect ripeness.

2007 Vina Alicia Nebbiolo (Mendoza , Argentina)
90 points, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: Bright, saturated ruby-red. Slightly reduced aromas of black cherry and menthol. Lively and densely packed, with a youthfully clenched quality to the flavors of blackberry, black cherry, licorice and menthol. Finishes with distinctly spicy tannins and a medicinal reserve. This bottling hasn't screamed nebbiolo to me since the first vintage I tried several years ago but is still one of the very few intriguing versions of this variety made outside northwest Italy.

2011 Puro Uno Mega Malbec (Lujan De Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina)
93 points, James Suckling: Single vineyard, century old vines, aged 30 months in 100% new oak, 70% French and 30% American.

2015 Col Solare (Red Mountain, Washington)
92 points, Wine Spectator:Expressive and refined, in an appealingly zesty way, offering lively black cherry, cracked pepper and crushed stone accents that take on richness toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2023.
